Square Foot Calculator with Height
When a space has a third dimension — height — you can calculate both area and volume. Volume is measured in cubic feet (ft³) and is used for paint, concrete, fill material, and storage.
A room 12 ft long, 10 ft wide, and 9 ft tall has a floor area of 120 sq ft and a volume of 1,080 cu ft. Use the height field to calculate wall area and volume for HVAC, paint, or fill estimates.
Wall Area Formula
For a 12 × 10 ft room with 9-ft ceilings: 2 × 9 × (12 + 10) = 396 sq ft of total wall area (before subtracting windows and doors).
How to Calculate Area and Volume
- Measure length and width: The floor dimensions in feet.
- Measure height (ceiling): Floor-to-ceiling height in feet.
- Calculate area: Length × Width for the floor or ceiling.
- Calculate volume: Length × Width × Height for the room volume.
- Calculate wall area: 2 × H × (L + W) then subtract doors and windows.
Height-Based Calculation Examples
| Use Case | Formula |
|---|---|
| Paint a room (walls) | 2 × H × (L+W) − openings |
| Fill a raised bed (soil) | L × W × H (in feet) → ÷27 for cu yd |
| HVAC sizing | L × W × H = room volume in cu ft |
| Concrete slab | L × W × thickness ÷ 27 = cu yd |
Frequently Asked Questions
Square footage is a 2D measurement (floor area = length × width). Height adds a third dimension, giving you cubic footage (volume = L × W × H). Use height to calculate wall area or volume, not the floor's square footage.
Use 2 × Height × (Length + Width) for all four walls combined. Subtract window and door areas. A 12×10 ft room with 9-ft ceilings has 2 × 9 × 22 = 396 sq ft of total wall area.
Multiply length × width × height (all in feet). A 12 × 10 × 9 ft room = 1,080 cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards.
Calculate wall area (2 × H × (L+W)) and subtract doors (~20 sq ft each) and windows (~15 sq ft each). Divide by 350 for the number of gallons needed per coat. Most rooms need 2 coats.
Square feet measures 2D surface area (floors, walls, ceilings). Cubic feet measures 3D volume (air space, storage, fill material). Adding height converts square footage to cubic footage.
