Driveway Square Footage Formula
Calculate driveway square footage with Area = Length × Width. For a straight rectangular driveway this is straightforward. For L-shaped or curved driveways, divide into sections and sum the areas.
A 40 × 12 ft driveway = 480 sq ft. Knowing the area lets you estimate how much concrete, asphalt, gravel, or pavers you need, plus the total material and labor cost.
Material Volume
For concrete and asphalt, you also need volume. Multiply the area by the slab thickness (in feet): Volume (cu ft) = Area × Thickness. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards, the unit used for concrete orders.
How to Measure Your Driveway
- Measure the length: From the garage or building edge to the street or end of paving.
- Measure the width: Across the driveway at its widest point. For tapered driveways, measure the average width.
- Enter thickness: Standard concrete driveways are 4 inches; heavy-use driveways 6 inches. Asphalt is typically 2–3 inches.
- Select the material: The calculator estimates the cost range for concrete, asphalt, gravel, or pavers.
Standard Driveway Sizes
| Driveway Type | Typical Size | Square Feet |
|---|---|---|
| Single-car | 10 × 20 ft | 200 sq ft |
| Double-car | 20 × 20 ft | 400 sq ft |
| Long single | 10 × 50 ft | 500 sq ft |
| Long double | 20 × 50 ft | 1,000 sq ft |
| Circular | 30 ft diameter | 706 sq ft |
Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply the length by the width in feet. A 40 × 12 ft driveway = 480 sq ft. For irregular shapes, split into rectangles and add the areas.
Calculate area × thickness in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 480 sq ft driveway at 4-inch (0.33 ft) thickness needs 480 × 0.33 ÷ 27 = 5.9 cubic yards of concrete.
A single-car driveway is typically 9–12 feet wide. A double-car driveway is 18–24 feet wide.
Calculate square footage, then multiply by the cost per sq ft for your material. Asphalt resurfacing runs $2–5/sq ft; concrete resurfacing $3–10/sq ft.
Calculate the area (length × width), then decide on depth. For a 4-inch gravel layer over 480 sq ft: 480 × (4÷12) = 160 cu ft = about 6 cu yd. Most suppliers sell gravel by the cubic yard.
Estimate a curved driveway by breaking it into rectangular sections and summing their areas. For a fully circular portion, use the circle area formula (π × r²) and add to the rectangular sections.
